We Built this City – Cairns out of Cardboard

MEDIA RELEASE                                                   Monday 3 Aug 2009

NEW TO FESTIVAL LINE UP: WE BUILT THIS CITY

KIDS CONSTRUCT CAIRNS OUT OF CARDBOARD

MEDIA CALL:  Wednesday 5 August, 3.30pm at City Place

Pat Flanagan, Director, Flanagan Consulting Group and Belinda Griffin, Festival Cairns Event Coordinator (and kids), will surround (shroud) themselves with cardboard boxes to celebrate the announcement of new event, We Built this City – especially for the kids.

For information: Pip Miller PR 0419 681543

Thanks to a major sponsorship pledge by Kewarra Beach Resort, along with a Cairns collective of generous development and construction industry players, Festival Cairns will bring it to the kids with an exciting new and free event: We Built this City.

As a specialist event on Cairns Regional Council’s program wish list that was pitched to the Cairns community earlier in the year, We Built this City quickly captured the imagination of well-known engineer, Pat Flanagan of Flanagan Consulting Group – who took it upon himself to solicit support from industry fellows to bring this idea to life.

Mr Flanagan was successful in his quest, with donations raised consolidated by the very generous sponsorship of Kewarra Beach Resort owner, Sean Howard, keen to support the community that has long supported this local business.

Swapping cardboard for concrete, kids architectural and construction capabilities will be put to the test in the middle weekend of Festival Cairns spanning Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August.  The Esplanade Plaza (the area where Shields Street and the Esplanade meet) will take new shape when stacks and stacks of cardboard boxes await the energy and imaginations of children.

According to Mayor Val Schier, Cairns Regional Council is delighted to add this world-class event into our dynamic mix of free entertainment for families.

“We Built This City is a public construction extravaganza, using nothing but thousands of cardboard boxes.  Guided by performers in the role of construction workers to facilitate free play, kids build an entire city in two days, before the whole thing is crushed (by its builders) into a recyclable heap of  rubble.

“Live music underscores the action, while challenges and outcomes are set along the way by, with and for the children.  We Built This City is not a play… it is play.”

We Built this City is an event by Polyglot that has been touring Australia continuously since its premiere in 2001.  Making its debut this year on the Festival Cairns program is significant – marking its first time in north Queensland.  Interestingly, these appearances will pre-empt the production’s US premiere at the prestigious Kennedy Centre in Washington DC.

Councillor Schier said that while this event adds credence to the free and family aspect of Festival Cairns, it is bound to focus the attention of city leaders and development industry representatives.

“I have been assured, that one of the most fascinating aspects of We Built This City is how it comes to reflect the urban architecture of the city in which it is taking place.  In Melbourne, for example, the children build houses with big backyards and fences.  In Perth, tunnels and an underground world to escape the heat.  In Sydney, bridges and monuments.  In Singapore, giant skyscrapers,” she said.

Show times:   Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th August – 9:30am and 2pm both days  (shows run for 2.5 hours)

Age:   5 to 12 years will enjoy this show the most – but little ones and “big kids” (that’s you mum & dad) are welcome to join the fun

Sunsafe:  This is an outdoor play activity so please remember to “slip, slop, slap and put on a hat” to join in safely.

Major Sponsor – Kewarra Beach Resort

Supporting Sponsors – Flanagan Consulting Group (organiser), Urban Development Institute of Australia, MGF Consulting Group, Capital Globe, Satterley, Planning Far North, and SPA Consulting Engineers

As event manager of Festival Cairns 2009, Cairns Regional Council gratefully acknowledges the support of major sponsors Arts Queensland, Queensland State Government, Ergon Energy and Pacific Toyota.  This year’s theme, “Telling our Stories” will roll out over 16, action-packed days between Friday 21 August and Sunday 6 September 09.

MacDonnell’s Turn on the Night Light

MEDIA RELEASE                                                 July 2009

MACDONNELLS LAW TURN ON NIGHT LIGHT

TO CELEBRATE 125 YEARS

MacDonnells Law will celebrate its 125th anniversary during Festival Cairns by both participating in and sponsoring Night Light: Short Films in the City.  From its prime position on the corner of Grafton and Shields Street, MacDonnells Law’s building will be transformed into a movie screen by night showing the lovingly produced works of nine film makers.

Night Light: Short Films in the City is a new project developed specifically for Festival Cairns 2009 program.

According to project coordinator, Annaliese Walker, it incorporates the work of nine local and established filmmakers.

“We are delighted with our collection of films that represent a remarkably well rounded profile of TNQ from the glory days of Cairns Yacht Club to a virtual drive around the city from a dashboard perspective and through to a surreal rainforest jaunt.”

To ensure a strong regional connection, the artists worked towards this year’s festival theme of “telling our stories”, referencing either the region’s rich history (through images supplied by the Cairns Historical Society) or creating vignettes of life in Tropical North Queensland today.

Night Light: Short Films in the City project will screen its films on a looped reel after dark throughout the festival period, appearing on screen from MacDonnells Law’s windows as well as a number of other random, inner city walls, shopfronts and screens.

Night Light: Short Films in the City:

Friday 21 August to Sunday 6 September from 6.30pm to 10pm

  • 21 August at Pacific International Hotel
  • 21 August to 6 September at Hides Hotel, Civic Theatre, Heritage Hotel, Tandem Skydive, ishop Cairns, MacDonnells Law and Twelve BC Cafe
  • 4 September at Cairns High School

This project is proudly sponsored by Tanks Arts Centre and MacDonnells Law.

For more information and entry pack contact Night Light: Short Films in the City Coordinator, Annaliese Ciel Walker at Tanks Arts Centre:  Ph: 4032 6600 – Email: a.walker@cairns.qld.gov.au

MINISTER, MAYOR AND MEDIA WRITE FESTIVAL BLOG

MEDIA RELEASE                                        Monday 3 August 2009

MINISTER, MAYOR AND MEDIA TO STEER FESTIVAL BLOG

As it grips the world in a clutch of Twitter, My Space and Facebook, Festival Cairns 2009 will embrace the phenomenon of social media with the inclusion of a blogging page in its newly designed website.

Local web designer, Nathan McCarthy of Empirosoft was contracted to oversee the re-design of www.festivalcairns.com.au and as part of his role, has ensured Festival Cairns, as an event, is perceived to be both contemporary  and compelling.  As such, browsers will enjoy an i-phone version of the website and the opportunity to get interactive via its blogging page.

Festival Cairns event coordinator, Belinda Griffin is pleased to announce details of Festival Cairns soon to be unveiled blogging page that will feature an exclusive, hand-picked panel of bloggers from Desley Boyle, MP, Member for Cairns and Councillor Val Schier, Mayor of Cairns Regional Council to Gavin King, NQ Correspondent and columnist of The Sunday Mail (formerly Chief of Staff at The Cairns Post), Jesse Kuch, timeOUT editor of The Cairns Post to breakfast radio hosts Kier Shorey of ABC Radio Far North and Marty and Bec from Hot FM.

“We also hope to have some of our key acts, like Tex Perkins and Best Job in the World winner, Ben Southall, make a guest appearance from time to time,” she said.

As a form of social media, blogging is an effective and interactive way of involving the ‘browsing’ community both at home here in Cairns and across the world.

“While our blogging panel will provide a beautifully rounded perspective into the event – from their subjective and personal point of view, it will also give festival goers the chance to respond and provide feedback,” she said.

On securing her place on the panel, Minister for Local Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Desley Boyle MP said she is delighted to take part.

“I am lucky enough to have been a Cairns local for over 30 years.  I love the hum and the energy that comes from living in a busy and developing city – surrounded by the magnificent natural beauty of the mountains, rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef,” said Minister Boyle.

This year Festival Cairns begins a new chapter.  For the first time in many years it will be managed and directed by its founding organisation, Cairns Regional Council; who last month, unveiled details of its vision to deliver a reinvigorated, brighter and bolder event program spanning visual and performing arts, culture and entertainment – showcasing the city’s key cultural precincts with a mix of free and ticketed events.

Festival Cairns will run between Friday 21 August and Sunday 6 September 2009.  This year’s theme is “Telling our Stories”.
