Festival Cairns’ official blogging page went ‘live’ this week with the unveiling of its panel and first series of ‘posts’.

Organisers are giving the panel the opportunity to meet and chat about the why’s and wherefore’s of their arduous task and sense of empowerment bestowed on
Monday 24 August at noon at Twelve B C Cafe in City Place.

Twelve BC is also one of Festival Cairns’ “Night Light” filming venues (their very own TELE is Telling our Stories as it screens the nine films from its window).

Media are welcome to attend and this event also doubles as a media call opportunity.

Date: Monday 24 August 09 Place: 12 BC Cafe in City Place Time: 12 noon

More about Blogging Panel:

As it grips the world in a clutch of Twitter, My Space and Facebook, Festival Cairns 2009 has embraced the phenomenon of social media with the inclusion of a blogging page in its newly designed website.

Local web designer, Nathan McCarthy of Empirosoft was contracted to oversee the re-design of www.festivalcairns.com.au and as part of his role, has ensured Festival Cairns, as an event, is perceived to be both contemporary and compelling. As such, browsers will enjoy an i-phone version of the website and the opportunity to get interactive via its blogging page.

Festival Cairns event coordinator, Belinda Griffin is pleased to announce details of Festival Cairns blogging page that features an exclusive, hand-picked panel of bloggers from Desley Boyle, MP, Member for Cairns and Councillor Val Schier, Mayor of Cairns Regional Council to Gavin King, NQ Correspondent and columnist of The Sunday Mail (formerly Chief of Staff at The Cairns Post), Jesse Kuch, timeOUT editor of The Cairns Post to breakfast radio hosts Kier Shorey of ABC Radio Far North and Marty and Bec from Hot FM.

“We also hope to have some of our key acts, like Tex Perkins and Best Job in the World winner, Ben Southall, make a guest appearance from time to time,” she said.

As a form of social media, blogging is an effective and interactive way of involving the ‘browsing’ community both at home here in Cairns and across the world.

“While our blogging panel will provide a beautifully rounded perspective into the event – from their subjective and personal point of view, it will also give festival goers the chance to respond and provide feedback,” she said.

On securing her place on the panel, Minister for Local Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Desley Boyle MP said she is delighted to take part.

“I am lucky enough to have been a Cairns local for over 30 years. I love the hum and the energy that comes from living in a busy and developing city – surrounded by the magnificent natural beauty of the mountains, rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef,” said Minister Boyle.

Festival Cairns will run between Friday 21 August and Sunday 6 September 2009. This year’s theme is “Telling our Stories”.

Johno Needs a Ute to Play in Parade

MEDIA RELEASE                                        Tuesday 18 August 2009

MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENTS – PACIFIC TOYOTA GRAND PARADE

WHAT:            LOCAL BLUES ICON “JOHNO” NEEDS A TRUCK!!

Cairns blues icon, Johno, of the legendary “Johno’s Blues Bar” has played in the city’s annual parade for many years….and this year will be no exception…but there is but one little hitch preventing this local character getting on board.  He is without wheels and needs a flat bed truck for his 4 piece blues band to play on…

If there is anyone ‘out there’ willing to lend Johnno a tray back vehicle for this year’s Pacific Toyota Grand Parade….please call Festival Cairns office on tel: 4044 3030 or email: festival@cairns.qld.gov.au

Pacific Toyota’s Grand Parade gets underway from 6pm this Saturday 22 August from Munro Martin Park – travelling down Minnie Street and turning right on the Esplanade to terminate at Fogarty Park.

This year’s parade is destined to be like no other, having been creatively directed by self-same fellow that looks after Adelaide Fringe Festival’s parade, Queensland boy, Scott Maidment of Strut n Fret. This company is known for injecting ‘wow’ and that will certainly be the flavour on Saturday night.

Festival Cairns event coordinator, Belinda Griffin also predicts that Pacific Toyota’s Grand Parade will also be a particularly musical affair (providing Johnno gets his ute that is) with Tania Kernaghan taking the helm of the naming sponsor’s float.

For the first time ever in the history of Festival Cairns, the crowd are invited vote for their favourite float….with their thumbs….thanks to the mobile technology, SMS.  All they have to do is SMS the word ‘parade’ followed by their favourite float number to 1996ZINC.

And thanks to new i-phone website technology, most mobile users can grab details of the parade while on the go.  Just go to www.festivalcairns.com.au

With road closures in place from 12pm,  parade goers should plan their outing and where they will park.  Cairns Regional Council has provided free parking in both Lake Street Parking Station and the old Library carpark in Abbott Street.

DON’T FORGET – parade route now shortened so vantage points are from Munro Martin park marshalling area, down  Minnie Street down, and along the Esplanade to Fogarty Park.

More about Pacific Toyota Grand Parade.

PACIFIC TOYOTA CONTINUES TO DRIVE FESTIVAL SUPPORT

Saturday 22 August  - and one day into Festival Cairns 2009will ‘bring it’ to Cairns community with Pacific Toyota’s Grand Parade.  As one of the top six highlights of Festival Cairns’ 2009 program, the parade is expected to draw crowds in their thousands, lining the esplanade for the annual procession through the streets.  Pacific Toyota will lead the charge along a new route from Munro Martin Park to the Esplanade and south to Fogarty Park – transporting the gorgeous and talented country music super star, Tania Kernaghan.

Some things change…and some stay the same!  With a recent change of ownership and a new format afoot for Festival Cairns, Pacific Toyota’s high level involvement as major sponsor was never assumed.  Festival Cairns coordinator, Belinda Griffin is pleased to announce that the car dealership’s support will live on as naming right’s sponsor of event highlight, the Grand Parade.

According to Belinda Griffin, Festival Cairns event coordinator, the name, ‘Pacific Toyota’ has always been synonymous with Festival Cairns – over the past seven years, joining Cairns Regional Council to take on a major sponsorship role of Festival Cairns and other community events.  Now, under new ownership, Pacific Toyota is back on the program, better than ever, with new owner, Greg Eastment picking up the reins of community support.

“We are absolutely thrilled to announce Pacific Toyota’s high level involvement will continue as a major sponsor with naming rights to program highlight, the Grand Parade.”

And to celebrate, Australia’s country music star, Tania Kernaghan will visit Cairns to participate in this year’s Grand Parade.  As guest of Pacific Toyota, Tania will ride on the back of Pacific Toyota’s Hilux (pimped for the Grand Parade) ute while her songs are played to the crowd via an impressive speaker system.

Attracting crowds of more than 35,000, the Pacific Toyota Grand Parade is one of Festival Cairns’ most highly anticipated free, family-fun events. This year, the popular event has been repositioned in the program to open Festival Cairns with a bang as the first of many highlights.

Just as the sun goes down, the lights come on and spectators in their thousands will line

the Esplanade for the beginning of the energetic procession of spectacular floats.

FREE Parking is provided at Lake Street parking station as well as the old Graft n Arts car park in Grafton Street (just up from City Cinemas).

This year promises even more amazing floats as Scott Maidment and his team who are responsible for Adelaide’s Fringe Festival parade are providing creative direction for the Grand Parade. Scott is conducting free workshops for parade participants to help create their entries.

A major creative collaboration between artists, community groups and local businesses will ensure the procession conveys the theme of Telling Our Stories. The Grand Parade will be the community’s chance to shine, while celebrating life in Cairns, its natural heritage and idyllic tropical lifestyle.

As the last float passes through the finish line, the excitement will hit fever pitch as fireworks explode and emblazon the night sky.

Tania Kernaghan Edited Biography- 2009

It’s no secret that Tania Kernaghan is one of Australia’s most successful and instantly recognizable artists in Country Music. Her record sales are in the hundreds of thousands and chart success that is matched by her reputation as one of Australia’s best live acts. From Broome to Bourke, Darwin to Devonport and from Coober Pedy to Cairns – Tania Kernaghan’s career continues to build from strength to strength and the fans just can’t get enough of this all Australian country girl.

In 1993 Tania caught the attention of ABC Country and released her first single, “I’ll Be Gone”, which was co-written by her younger sister Fiona and featured Keith Urban on guitar. She officially signed with ABC Country in 1995 and in January 1996 delivered the triumphant debut, “December Moon”.  The album went platinum, spawned a massive six hit singles and earned Tania three Golden Guitars. “December Moon” is one of the most successful country debut albums ever released in Australia and continues to sell strongly even over a decade later.

The follow up, “Dancing On Water”, arrived in 1999 and included the Top 5 hits “Dunroamin Station” and “When I Ride”. “Big Sky Country” was released in 2001 featuring “Steal Away” and “Goin’ Bush” while her fourth album, “Higher Ground”, landed in 2005 featuring the revved up “Harley McTaggart” and the #1 hit “Life Don’t Get Much Better Than This” which stayed at the top spot for 4 weeks.

2009 looks set to be another big year for Tania with the release of her highly anticipated 5th studio album, “Livin’ The Dream”. Officially released on 28th February 2009, the album was recorded between Nashville and QLD’s Gold Coast. The album boasts a who’s who of the best musicians in the world along with world class songs and impeccably produced by Tania’s brother in law, Daniel Kresco (Reba McEntire/Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood). The first single, “Second Time Around”, has been embraced by media proclaiming it as ‘one of Tania’s best yet!’

This year Tania made her big screen film debut in the movie, “Shadows of The Past”, which premiered in May 2009.

Besides music and on screen work, in 1999 Tania accepted the honour of becoming Vice Patron to the Riding For Disabled Association (a title shared by Princess Ann in the UK). RDA adopted Tania’s award winning song, “When I Ride”, as their national theme song.  She has also been an Australia Day Ambassador, People’s Choice Award recipient for Female Vocalist in 2000 and 2006 and was the first female performer to be inducted into the Galaxy of Stars Country Music Walk of Fame in Tamworth in 2005.

Application Forms to join the Grand Parade are on the Cairns Regional Council’s website www.cairns.qld.gov.au or contact Caress Creed on 4044 3594 or c.creed@cairns.qld.gov.au for more details.

                                                MEDIA NOTIFICATION

PHOTO CALL: FRIDAY 21 AUGUST AT 2PM AT Ba8 SHANGRI-LA HOTEL

Media are invited to a ‘meet and greet’ with Masterchef judge and accomplished chef, Gary Mehigan – whose celebrity status hit fever pitch in the tropical north recently with his four course lunch selling out in just three hours.  Gary will share his stories about Masterchef and his feelings about food, fresh produce and in particular, his passion to ‘cook’.

PIP MILLER PR 0419 681543

CELEBRITY CHEF GARY MEHIGAN

Foodie events take celebrity status at Festival Cairns this year with chef Gary Mehigan from TV’s Masterchef a draw card on the opening weekend; giving two, free, half-hour cooking demonstrations at The Pier’s Farmgate Markets on Saturday 22 August at 9.30am and 11am and the following day, crafting his Food Essentials menu, as part of the Regional Food Showcase, for a SELL OUT ticketed lunch at Sebel Reef House & Spa (a highlight of Festival Cairns newcomer, Taste of Palm Cove).

Cairns’ newest local food market, Farmgate, will be the venue for the charismatic Gary to turn his hand to the region’s fresh seasonal produce. The Saturday morning market specialises in locally produced and manufactured food plus agricultural value-added products sourced within a 200km radius of Cairns.

Get ready for a pressure cooker cook-off with Gary donning his Masterchef hat to adjudicate as keen local cooks battle for the title of Festival Cairns Masterchef.

Sample the British-trained chef’s creations the following day at Taste of Palm Cove. A special ticketed lunch created and crafted by Gary will be presented at Sebel Reef House and complemented by Stoneleigh Wines.  Gary believes that food should be fun, nurturing and the reason people come together to celebrate life and good times.  As special guest of this exclusive lunch, Gary will swap frying pans for a microphone to chat about food, life and of course, Masterchef.

  • Saturday 22 August: Farmgate Market Cooking Demonstrations 9.30am and 11.00am
  • Sunday 23 August: Sebel Reef House & Stoneleigh Wines Ticketed Lunch from 12 noon.  SOLD OUT

As well as his role as judge for Channel Ten’s new Masterchef series, Melbourne-based Gary has a regular cooking role on Channel Ten’s 9am with David & Kim, appears in the first series of Boys Weekend which airs in more than 12 countries. His series Good Chef, Bad Chef, which he completed in 2007, has been bought by several overseas networks including UK FoodTV, and is due to go into a second series in 2009.

Esplanart – Official Unveiling – Thursday 20 August

                                                MEDIA NOTIFICATION

ESPLANART

21 August – 6 September, 2009

Background: Fresh, innovative, local: Esplanart is a series of ten artworks, specifically commissioned and curated for Festival Cairns 2009, and presented along the Cairns Esplanade; a premier showcase area and “front yard” of our region.

Discoverable on expanses of sand, amidst trees, and amongst busy picnic tables on the grass, this unique collection is of an ephemeral nature, it’s presence designed to be short-lived and passing, like the natural elements that share this transitory space.

The local artists involved were selected for their diversity of style, background, experience and stages of career development, and feature Jill Chism, Jessie Hall, Dominic Johns, Leith Maguire, Tijn Meulendjiks, Simon Poole, Paloma Ramos, Brian Robinson, Kristin Tennyson and Daniel Wallwork.

The artworks will be hosted along the Esplanade boardwalk at the end of Aplin Street and in the heart of the festival activities, with the hope that this inaugural event will catch the imagination of the public and become a potential signature event for Festival Cairns in years to come.

Official Opening:  Thursday 20 August (time TBC)

T-Shirts to Save Tree Kangas

MEDIA RELEASE                               Wednesday 13 August 2009

FESTIVAL CAIRNS MERCHANDISE MAKES FUNKY, FUNDRAISING STATEMENT!

PHOTO CALL: WEDNESDAY 12 AUGUST AT 2 PM

MOFO, 70 MCLEOD STREET, CAIRNS

Funky, festive and fundraising…..t-shirts and slouch bags incorporating the designs of local artists Sam Tupou and Malachi Aird of MOFO (Merchants of Fine Objects) Cairns will be unveiled (worn by artists, kids and festival organiser) as the official merchandise for Festival Cairns 2009.

The range, featuring two designs of t-shirts for adults and kids and one slouch bag big enough to hold festival goers paraphernalia is now on sale at Ticket Link, Festival Cairns office in City Place and MOFO Cairns, 70 McLeod Street, Cairns.

According to Festival Cairns event coordinator, Belinda Griffin, the t-shirts are not just about conveying the spirit of Festival Cairns, but also raising money for a worthy cause.

“One of our t-shirt designs features a Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo (nicknamed “Mabi” as that is the local Aboriginal name for them) that’s endemic only to our region. Developed especially to draw attention to the plight of this threatened species, a percentage of all t-shirt sales will benefit this cause and we are planning a special presentation of these proceeds to the Tree Kangaroo & Mammal Group, Monday 7 September, to mark Cairns Regional Council’s contribution to National Threatened Species Day and the good work of groups such as this,” said Mrs Griffin.

Local artist, Sam Tupou founded boutique screen printing company, MOFO in 2007.  He is well known for his pop-art inspired Perspex and colourful artworks.  He is also a founding member of popular art co-operative, The Upholstery.

Tupou launched his own line of t-shirts under the Humbug label in the early nineties.

According to Tupou, he uses Tapa patterns inspired by his Pacific Island heritage (New Zealand born with Tongan father).

Originally from Wallaroo, near Adelaide, Malachi Aird has travelled the world as a chalk-artist, reproducing renaissance master paintings before settling in Cairns.

While nowadays he is putting his creativity to good use at MOFO, he also likes to paint using acrylics or to make digital computer sketchings.  He is also the collector of boys toys or rather, figures and figurines from fantasy and boys own adventures.
